Hapé — The Sacred Snuff of the Amazon

A medicine of grounding, clarity, and prayer.

Deep within the Amazon rainforest, the sacred medicine of Hapé (also known as Rapé) has been shared for countless generations by Indigenous peoples such as the Yawanawá, Huni Kuin, and Katukina. It is a powerful blend of finely ground mapacho (Amazonian tobacco) and medicinal plants, prepared with deep prayer and intention.

Hapé is far more than a plant mixture. It is a spirit of medicine — one that clears the mind, aligns the body, and reconnects the soul to the present moment. When shared in ceremony or quiet reflection, it invites grounding, stillness, and clarity of thought.

A Tradition of the Forest

The preparation of Hapé is a sacred art passed down through generations. Each ingredient is gathered from the forest with prayer, then pounded and sifted by hand. The medicine is consecrated with songs and intention, carrying the vibration of those who made it.

In the Amazon, Hapé is traditionally shared before ceremonies, to open prayer and bring focus to the heart. It is offered as an act of cleansing — to quiet the mind, lift emotional heaviness, and restore balance to the energetic body.

How Hapé Is Used

Hapé is applied through the nose using a small pipe.

  • A Kuripe is used for self-application, directing the medicine from the heart to one’s own nostrils.
  • A Tepi is used when one person serves another, symbolising trust, reciprocity, and the flow of prayer.

The moment of receiving Hapé is a moment of surrender. One sits upright, breathes through the mouth, and allows the medicine to move through the body — cleansing, centring, and realigning.

The Experience

The first moments can be intense. You may feel a wave of heat or tingling across the body. Tears might arise as emotions release. Some people experience light nausea or the need to purge — a sign of deep cleansing. Others feel stillness, focus, or deep connection to the breath.

Hapé often brings:

  • Mental clarity and focus
  • Emotional release and grounding
  • Energetic purification
  • Deepened connection to prayer, song, and ceremony

It is not a psychedelic or hallucinogen — its power lies in its ability to open the channels of presence.

A Prayer of Connection

To receive Hapé is to honour the forest and the Indigenous lineages that carry this wisdom. It reminds us that healing is not always about doing, but about listening — to the breath, to the earth beneath us, to the whisper of spirit.

We share this medicine in reverence and gratitude to the Yawanawá, Huni Kuin, and all Indigenous guardians who protect and preserve this sacred tradition.

If you wish to experience Hapé in prayerful community, join us at one of our upcoming ceremonies or gatherings. We offer this medicine always with respect, intention, and guidance from the Indigenous teachings that inspire Jungle Gateway.
