Kambô — The Cleansing Medicine of the Rainforest
A ritual of purification, renewal, and strength
Deep in the Amazon rainforest lives the Phyllomedusa bicolor, the giant green tree frog. The secretion of this frog — known as Kambô — is revered by Indigenous tribes such as the Matsés, Katukina, and Huni Kuin as a sacred medicine of purification and strength.
Kambô is not a psychedelic medicine. It is a physical and energetic cleansing ritual — a powerful reset for the body, mind, and spirit. Traditionally used to clear panema (stagnant or heavy energy), it helps restore clarity, vitality, and connection to life.
Ancestral Origins
For generations, Kambô has been used by hunters and healers in the forest to bring stamina, sharpen senses, and remove energetic blockages. Before collecting the secretion, the tribes sing prayers to the frog, ensuring no harm is done — the frog is gently handled, its medicine received, and then released back into the forest.
In Indigenous culture, this ritual is a way of realigning with nature’s rhythm — a remembrance of our deep bond with the living Earth.
The Ceremony
A Kambô ceremony is carried out in sacred space, with prayer and intention. Small burns, called gates, are made on the surface of the skin — often on the upper arm or leg — and a small amount of the secretion is applied.
The medicine enters the lymphatic system and works swiftly, often bringing about a purge — through sweating, shaking, crying, or vomiting — as the body and spirit release what no longer serves.
The experience typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes, after which participants rest, drink water, and allow the body to settle.
Preparation
Approaching Kambô requires respect and readiness. This is a medicine of truth and purification, not comfort.
Before ceremony:
- Fast for 8–10 hours (no food or caffeine).
- Drink plenty of water the day before.
- Avoid alcohol, sugar, and heavy foods for 24 hours prior.
- Set an intention for your cleanse — something you wish to release or renew.
Kambô should always be served by a trained and experienced practitioner, never self-administered.
What You May Feel
The immediate sensations can be intense — heat, a racing heart, or pressure in the head and stomach. These pass as the body purges and rebalances. Afterward, many people feel:
- A sense of lightness and clarity
- Increased energy and vitality
- Emotional relief and mental calm
- A deeper connection to self and spirit
Aftercare & Integration
After your session:
- Rest and eat light, nourishing food (soups, fruits, vegetables).
- Continue to hydrate well.
- Spend time in nature or quiet reflection.
- Avoid stimulants, alcohol, or strong foods for 24–48 hours.
- Journal your experience and notice what shifts in the days that follow.
The medicine continues to work gently even after the ceremony ends, supporting physical detox and emotional clarity.
A Prayer of Gratitude
Kambô teaches us that purification is a form of love — an act of remembering who we truly are beneath the layers of heaviness and fear. Each ceremony is an offering back to the Earth, a renewal of our strength and our service to life.
We honour the tribes of the Amazon — the Matsés, Katukina, and Huni Kuin — and the frog spirit who continues to share this powerful medicine with humanity.
For those feeling called to Kambô, we invite you to connect with our trusted facilitators and community gatherings, where this medicine is offered with respect, safety, and the blessings of the forest.
