Dieta – The Ancestral Spiritual Study of the Yawanawá

The Yawanawá Dieta (Samakei – The Time of Silence) is one of the most sacred spiritual practices of the Yawanawá people. It is a deep, transformative study guided by the Pajés (spiritual leaders) and held in full reciprocity with the rainforest, its spirits, and the ancestors.

A Dieta is not a retreat.
It is a commitment to healing, clarity, discipline, and spiritual growth, supported by the wisdom of an ancient lineage and the medicines of the forest.

During this period, participants receive individual prayers from the Pajé, drink the traditional Caiçuma (a sacred corn preparation), and follow a specific diet and lifestyle that opens the body, mind, and spirit to deeper guidance.

It is a profound journey for those who feel called to reconnect with themselves, clear obstacles from their path, and cultivate a stronger relationship with the spirit world.

What Is the Purpose of a Dieta?

In the Yawanawá tradition, a Dieta is a gateway into:

  • Healing emotional, physical, or spiritual imbalances
  • Strengthening intention and clarity
  • Releasing blockages preventing life from unfolding
  • Deepening connection with ancestral and plant spirits
  • Learning the foundations of Yawanawá spirituality
  • Growing discipline, focus, and purpose

It is considered one of the most powerful ways to realign the body and spirit and to receive guidance for the next steps of one’s path.

How the Dieta Works

#A Dieta begins when the Pajé performs a sacred prayer and opens an individual spiritual “path” for you. From that moment, the person enters a period of discipline and silence, traditionally lasting at least one month.

Key elements include:

• Drinking Caiçuma: A sacred corn preparation that cleanses and prepares the body for spiritual study.

• Fasting & Simplicity: The first 10 days involve:

  • 1L of liquid per day
  • No water
  • No salt
  • No sugar
  • No oil
  • No sex or sexual activity

Afterward, food remains simple and minimal—rice, corn, beans, basic vegetables, and small portions.

• Disciplines: During the Dieta:

  • No sharing of food, cups, or utensils
  • No Rapé in the presence of others, especially children
  • Limited interaction and minimal conversations
  • Avoidance of technology and outside stimulation
  • Deep attention to dreams, signs, and intuition

• Medicines of the Forest: Depending on the Pajé’s guidance, one may receive:

  • Uni (Ayahuasca)
  • Rapé / Rume
  • Sananga
  • Plant baths
  • Sepá (cleansing resin)

Everything is offered in alignment with the individual process and the instructions of the Pajé.

Life During the Dieta

A Dieta is a return to simplicity.

Participants stay close to the forest, receive ancestral teachings, and learn to listen deeply—both inwardly and to the wisdom of nature.

Daily life may include:

  • Time for reflection and silence
  • Gentle participation in community rhythms
  • Observing dreams
  • Learning songs, prayers, language, and traditional knowledge
  • Moments of guidance and check-ins with the Pajé

The inner journey is supported by the land, the elders, and the medicines that arise naturally during the process.

Who Is a Dieta For?

A Dieta is for those who feel a sincere call to:

  • Heal deeply
  • Strengthen their spiritual path
  • Reconnect with their essence
  • Study ancestral knowledge with humility
  • Commit to a disciplined, powerful process

It is recommended for individuals with emotional, physical, or spiritual intentions, and also for those who wish to learn more deeply from the Yawanawá lineage.
